Lodging:
Karlsa Lodge - Built in the late 1920´s but since renovated, the main house is a great example of the architecture and style of the era and all efforts have been made to retain the style and charm of the original structure. After a day of skiing nothing beats relaxing in the outdoor sauna or soaking in the hot tub with the view of the snow capped peaks across the fjord.
It has been said that location is everything and in that regard Karlsá is perfectly situated on the Troll Peninsula with amazing terrain accessible with only a few minutes flight or a short ski tour. Karlsá is 40 minutes away from the Akureyri airport, 2 minutes away from the cozy town of Dalvík, 10 minutes away from Ólafsfjörður and strategically located right in the middle of the best skiing terrain on the Troll Peninsula. No location comes close to Karlsá Lodge in convenience and ease of access. In addition Karlsá is situated right on the ocean with spectacular views across the fjord to the Gold Coast hence combining the two things that make skiing in Iceland so very special, the mountains and the ocean, skiing all the way to the sea.
Terrain:
No other ski lodge in Iceland boasts multiple 4000ft perfect fall line runs right to the front door of your ski in/out - fly in/out lodge. What this means in Iceland where heli skiing companies charge per flight time, is that you will get more skiing for every minute flown with Arctic Heli Skiing than anyone else. This is due to the simple fact that our ski runs are longer and at the end of the day you can bang out as many runs as you like that take your right back home, with no flight time wasted. Our central location gives us flexibility to fly and ski in difficult weather conditions.
The Troll Peninsula and the Hidden Land are every skier's dreamland with about 90% of the mountains skiable, meaning there are not many cliff faces or flat spots. The mountains are the perfect mix of steep couloirs and faces, to wide open glacier runs. What really sets Iceland apart from any other heli ski destination is the fact that you can ski up to 1200m runs all the way down to the ocean. Standing on top of a magnificent mountain at 66 degrees north with the deep blue of the Arctic Ocean ahead and endless snow capped peaks on all other sides is something utterly unique and spellbinding.
There are plenty of runs for skiers of all abilities from very extreme terrain suitable for the pro riders to nice and friendly areas for the first time heli skier. The Mountains of the Troll's are up to 1500m or 5000ft high but you can in many cases, ski that entire vertical all the way down to the ocean. The average heli ski run is around 900m or 3000ft in vertical drop. Due to our northerly position there is no tree skiing in Iceland, in fact the local joke is that if you get lost in an Icelandic forest, you just have to stand up.
Food:
All Meals are covered once you arrive at the lodge. The focus is on high quality Icelandic ingredients such as organic lamb, fresh fish and game meats such as goose, with great emphasis on using what nature provides in the region. Those with special dietary needs will not have to worry, for our chef is well versed in the ways of various diets.
Transport:
Our base of operations is in the north of Iceland just 55 minutes north of Akureyri and outside the town of Dalvík. All International flights arrive at Keflavik in the south of Iceland. This is 45 minutes outside of Iceland's capital, Reykjavik. The Troll Peninsula in the north where we are based is approximately 5 hours from Reykjavik by car or 35 minutes via domestic flight.
We ask you to arrange travel to Akureyri by flight or tourist travel and can assist with your pre trip itinerary if needed. We will pick you up at the Akureyri (AEY) Airport on arrival day and make a stop at local grocery/beer and wine store on the way to the lodge. A group dinner is served at the lodge upon arrival. On the final day of the program we recommend that guests take an evening flight out of Akureyri so that they can get the most out of skiing or riding on that day.
Style of Trip:
We keep our groups small (4:1 Ratio) to allow for flexibility of finding good snow and adapting quickly to the crazy amounts of snow that tends to blanket the region. We use the heli to maximize our touring time and create unique valley to valley ski tours. Iceland can have wild weather especially in March and early April which is another reason we have opted for the heli assist to make the best use of shorter duration weather windows. If any of the heli time remains at the end of the trip because we choose to tour more or because the weather is too rugged to fly, it will be refunded in full which is a uniquely awesome policy. We have averaged 4 out of 6 days flyable in our time here and on no-fly days we can ski tour in some smaller tree zones, ski at local resorts, surf, or have a relaxing day at the local thermal baths. With ample daylight it is possible to depart on sunset ski tours from the lodge as late as 7PM if weather allows!!
