Lodging:
Karlsa Lodge - Built in the late 1920´s but since renovated, the main house is a great example of the architecture and style of the era and all efforts have been made to retain the style and charm of the original structure. In addition the old cow shed has now been transformed into a workshop where skiers can store and maintain their skis. After a day of skiing nothing beats relaxing in the outdoor sauna or soaking in the hot tub with the view of the snow capped peaks across the fjord.
It has been said that location is everything and in that regard Karlsá is perfectly situated on the Troll Peninsula with amazing terrain accessible with only a few minutes flight. Karlsá is 40 minutes away from the Akureyri airport, 2 minutes away from the cozy town of Dalvík, 10 minutes away from Ólafsfjörður and strategically located right in the middle of the best skiing terrain on the Troll Peninsula. No location comes close to Karlsá Lodge in convenience and ease of access. In addition Karlsá is situated right on the ocean with spectacular views across the fjord to the Gold Coast hence combining the two things that make skiing in Iceland so very special, the mountains and the ocean, skiing all the way to the sea.
Terrain:
No other ski lodge in Iceland boasts multiple 1280m or 4200ft perfect fall line runs right to the front door of your ski in - fly out cabin. What this means in Iceland where heli skiing companies charge per flight time, is that you will get more skiing for every hour flown with Arctic Heli Skiing than anyone else. This is due to the simple fact that our ski runs are longer and at the end of the day you can bang out as many runs as you like that take your right back home, with no flight time wasted and some pretty incredible averages when it comes to meters skied per hours flown. This central location gives Arctic Heli Skiing unrivaled flexibility to fly and ski in difficult weather conditions.
The Troll Peninsula and the Hidden Land are every skier's dreamland with about 90% of the mountains skiable, meaning there are not many cliff faces or flat spots. The mountains are the perfect mix of steep couloirs and faces, to wide open glacier runs. What really sets Iceland apart from any other heli ski destination is the fact that you can ski up to 1200m runs all the way down to the ocean. Standing on top of a magnificent mountain at 66 degrees north with the deep blue of the Arctic Ocean ahead and endless snow capped peaks on all other sides is something utterly unique and spellbinding. Here Arctic Heli Skiing is truly ahead of the game with the great majority of all the ski to the sea runs in the area under exclusive use contracts, guaranteeing you the chance to ski from summit to sea.
There are plenty of runs for skiers of all abilities from very extreme terrain suitable for the pro riders to nice and friendly areas for the first time heli skier. The Mountains of the Troll's are up to 1500m or 5000ft high but you can in many cases, ski that entire vertical all the way down to the ocean. The average heli ski run is around 900m or 3000ft in vertical drop. Due to our northerly position there is no tree skiing in Iceland, in fact the local joke is that if you get lost in an Icelandic forest, you just have to stand up.
Food:
We eat hearty western breakfasts at the lodge so power up for the day. Mid day lunch on the mountain at any number of noodle shops and we eat out at night to take advantage of the small local restaurants that have everything from sushi, kebabs, omelets, to the best pork cutlets and wagyu beef. We Include 3-4 group dinners and during these dinners serve as cultural experiences eating with the many local families that run restaurants in town. Often times we are sampling rice and veggies from the restaurant family’s own farm where they grow and forage for local delicacies.
Transport:
We can provide help with transport from Tokyo to Myoko and highly recommend the Shinkansen Train (Bullet) as an efficient way to travel. We also recommend that you use a transport service for your ski bags and travel light. These services will send your luggage ahead which will be waiting for you at the lodge. Once in Myoko we provide private shuttles from the lodge to various skiing, dining, and travel destinations. Many Onsen and restaurant options are within walking distance of our lodge in the evenings. Travel time from Tokyo to Akakura Onsen where we stay is about 3 hours via bullet train.
Style of Trip:
We keep our groups small (4:1 Ratio) to allow for flexibility of finding good snow and adapting quickly to the crazy amounts of snow that tends to blanket the region. We work as a team to get out in the morning... Often times last year we would have over a meter fall in 24 hours... sometimes hard to even open the lodge door in the morning. The focus is on skiing and we plan to ski all day, hit an Onsen for a soak in the evening, grab dinner, rinse and repeat.
We require that you have skis with a touring binding and comfortable boots or splitboard.
You are welcome to treat it as a working vacation if needed we have good wifi and office access at the lodge.
